Fashion Innovation In Olympics

2008 Olympic Game is around the corner. It’s not only a big competition for the athletes around world, but also will be a grand meeting for fashion.

Date back to the ancient Greece. Male athletes wore nothing but only some olive oil to show their vigorous and graceful body. With the time passed by, people gradually found suitable clothes would help them do a better job in the game. So they began to wear different kinds of sportswear in different fields of sports and never stop to explore a better suit both in style and function.

“Who cares Kournikouva’s score in the match? All they care is the length of her skirt!’

Tennis apparel has gone through earth-shaking changes since it was first born. The early female tennis clothing were inspired by aristocratic young lady’s clothing in the Middle Ages. All the female athletes should wear ankle-length white one-piece dresses, strait waistcoats, underskirts and hats until French contestant Suzanne Lenglen changes them into short sleeves, loose knee-length pleated skirt and the stockings. This facile dress helped her to win 6 Wimbledon championships and two Olympic Game gold medals. It has also won the media’s classical evaluation: ‘ War of Bare Legs on the Tennis Court ‘

Since then, the tennis skirt became more and more mini, colorful, and various in styles, which made the athletes seems sexy, healthy and full of passion. Tennis is no longer a simple sports but also kind of art. It’s fashion and elegant which lead thousands of millions people crazy for it.

Same things also happened in skating. Early in the last century, world famous figure skating star Sonja Henie made a great revolution in figure skating skirt, which lift its lengthen to the kneel 

This astonishing pioneering work has created an advantageous condition to improve female single skating technology.

But not every courageous woman who dares to break the convention is as lucky as two above. The Australian swimmer Annette Kellermann was arrested on a Boston beach for wearing a brief one-piece swimsuit in 1907. Women used to wear loose shirts when swimming and seldom considered of the function. The bikini, which we are so familiar to, is invented in 1940s and it was no be totally accepted until it was formally appeared in 1968 Olympic Game. Since than, it conquered millions hearts of the youth.

With the development of science and technology, sports today are not only a competition for physical body but also a race for high technology.

Did you still remember the sharkskin swimsuit appear in 2000 Sydney Olympic Game? It was designed on the hydrodynamics of a shark’s skin which can increases the swimmer’s speed by redusing the passive drag through water by up to four percent more than the next best swimsuit. 130 national and the local contestants wore this kind of swimsuit in the game and finally won 80% swimming medals in Sydney Olympic Game. 

You might also not forget the golden shoes worn by Michael Johnson in that Olympics. They had drawn the attention of the whole world once appeared. Nike came up with this track shoes with a sole that weight featherly only 30g. The shoes being made of a material called Zytel, a Dupont Nylon polymer. It can reduce the burden on his foot and guarantee his safety as well.

In the recent years many aerodynamics experts has participated in designing and making gym suits for the athletes. All kinds of factors, the geographical position, the temperature, the wind speed and the runway surface condition est., have been considered. The gym suits also select different colors and quality of materials according to the different parts of body, which may help muscles to reach a high temperature and enable the body to have more energy.

Generally, a scientifically designed suit can definitely help athletes to do better in the games.

Sportswear today has already come into normal people’s life. People wear sportswear in their daily life not only for its functional design but also for its fashionable design. In 2000 Olympics, the red and yellow fire dragons on Chinese athletes’ suits have become the most popular logo around the year.

Sportswear became more and more fashionable is a big trend. To realize it, we should continuously make progress in both inside and outside.

With the Olympics came near, China has become one of the largest and most potential markets of sportswear. Many local and international sports brands have aimed at this big chance to enlarge its own business and raise its reputation.

An Adidas senior manager indicated that their corporate goal is surpass Nike in the Chinese market before 2008 Olympics. Presently, the company sped up opening shops, and signed agreement to support Olympic Game. It has also purchased Reebok recently to elevate its competence.

Our local brand Linin has also announced one of his ambitions was to wear American athletes in Chinese brand in Olympics one day.

In fact the 2008 Olympics is really a fabulous chance for China to advocate our own fashion industry.

Recently, a Chinese concept Fashion Design competition ‘Humanity Olympics’ was held in Beijing.

It has purpose for spreading Chinese culture, developing local brands, demonstrating the Olympics spirit and innovating fashion in life. At the same time, this big game has also given out a very good proposition for Chinese Fashion Industry: How to integrate Chinese tradition elements with modern fashion? That is what we should consider.

When the Olympics comes, we hope the world would see a China: Vigorous in body, advanced in technology, fashionable in design and traditional in culture.
